“The protection of the public safety is the first responsibility of local government...”
California Constitution, Article XIII, Section 35, paragraph 2
DID YOU KNOW that in 2022 Portola Valley’s current Town Council, under the direction of Hughes, submitted the Town’s Hazard Mitigation Plan to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designating that the fire risk in Portola Valley was “low to medium”?!
The Town Council ignored public objection and still chose to rank our fire risk as lower than earthquake, landslide, and weather – barely above flooding and drought! Compare Woodside, which characterized fire as their greatest risk by far.

Judge for yourself, click on this link to watch a powerful video on the fire hazard that exists in Portola Valley—which explains that "we have an enormous potential for serious, high-intensity, rapid spreading fire in the place we call home."
We need to correctly recognize our safety hazards and plan appropriately to mitigate the resulting risks—not pretend that they do not exist, as Craig Hughes would have us do.
